The problem is that many teenagers trick or treat in large groups, don’t dress up, get overly excited (perhaps it’s the Stitch asaurus disney Christmas T-shirt Also,I will get this sugar?), take more candy than they are supposed to, aren’t terribly polite, come way too late, and/or subconsciously behave in a way that is intimidating to little kids. When my kids are teenagers, I will tell them that they can continue to trick-or-treat if they follow the above guidelines. But as an alternative, I will encourage them to bring over a group of friends and transform our house into a haunted house. They can then act as the monsters in the haunted house, and pass out candy instead of trick-or-treating. I will allow them to eat any candy that doesn’t get passed out, so they can still get their candy fix.

Many people have many rules and many preferences as to this and make their own specifications. Some will settle for just a mask. Some set age restrictions on kids and refuse them candy no matter how much effort they put in to their costume. The first is people who turn away kids with costumes because they assume they are too old for trick or treating. How can you be sure how old those kids are? Why do you care as long as they are polite and dressed in a costume? What difference is it to you?? For all you know that could be the first time that kid has ever been allowed to go trick or treating. Or they could be taking a younger sibling out trick or treating like I did for years and if you ask me, that deserves some damn candy — that’s hard work right there. And the second thing I dislike on Halloween is someone showing up at my door without a costume expecting candy. Wanting something for nothing. Don’t feed me this “I’m dressed up as Kevin and he’s dressed up as me” crap. I’m not stupid. And you’re not undercover. And you’re not a “realistic ghost”. And you’re not dressed up as your dad when he was your age either. You’ve got 20 min. Run home, put something together, no matter how ridiculous it is, and I’ll give you candy but don’t show up expecting something for nothing. If you’re too cool to dress up then you’re too cool for my candy.
